Forgotten Memories

Maybe my story is similar to others, a boy, a girl, a feeling that sometimes cannot be responded, or maybe hope that is discovered in the middle of hopelessness, anyway, I will start. I remember the first time he talked to me… “1963” it was a beautiful summer night, it was so late that the Eiffel tower’s visiting hours were over.

It had been a stressful day in my work, a day full of shouts, a lot of rude customers and so many orders to serve. When I finished my work at night I decided to relax walking around the city before arriving home. I was walking near the Eiffel tower and I sat down on a bench under a huge tree, and finally I got relaxed. It was a nice and comfortable moment and thoughts started crossing my mind about silly things, but then I began thinking about the five pleasures in my life: “tasting food, listening to a good song alone, smelling the different fragrances of nature, looking at the stars, and…and” and suddenly I saw a guy walking towards me, I was scared because it was too late and I was alone, I did not know what to do, “Should I run away?”. When he started approaching I stood up to go, but he stopped me and asked me the time, I lifted my head to look at him and “wow he is like an angel” I thought. “2:05” I said stuttering, he thanked my answer, but then his deep sight took my fear away, I smiled looking at the floor, and he told me that my smile was pretty. I do not know what he was doing at 2:05 am walking around the city, maybe the same as me, I do not know and maybe I will never know.

On the other hand, it is impressive how a simple question can be the beginning of a great conversation. Well, after that question he continued with some others, we sat down under that huge tree and the conversation simply happened. His presence gave me confidence, even when he was a total stranger to me. We talked about the obvious information that we usually want to know “name, age, job, address, hobbies, etc” his name was Emile, he worked in a known music store, he was 26 years old he was just three years older than me. That night we had an exciting conversation, suddenly it started raining as other random raining in Paris. He took off his brown jacket and gave it to me and I took a taxi to go home. That night I could not sleep thinking about him and about his great personality.

The next day, before arriving to my work I got to his work to give him back his jacket and he asked me for my telephone number. Emile began calling me, at the beginning he called me for some minutes, but those minutes turned into hours. Then we started going out, just as friends. I enjoyed a lot the time I spent with him, walking in the city without any direction, dancing in the “Luxembourg” garden without music, watching the lights of the city at night, enjoying a good wine, being in the bridge watching the “Seine” river and laughing all the time. I liked every single thing about him, he was tall, thin, and brown, and he had brown hair, beard, beautiful brown eyes, delicate lips, and perfect hands. But what I liked the most was his personality, smart, crazy, fun, lovely, romantic, fearless and sincere. After two months I realized that I was totally in love with him, he was in my mind all the time, I felt those butterflies flying in my stomach, and when I saw him my heart beat faster. It seemed he felt the same as me, I was not sure, but his eyes showed me the same feeling as mine.

One day he called me to invite me to have dinner in a nice restaurant “Le jardin du Nicolas”, and I thought “it must be something important to go to an elegant restaurant”, of course I thought that he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend, so I spent more time getting dressed and putting on my makeup. He wanted to see me there at 10:00 pm, but it was 11:30 pm and he had not arrived. At that moment I felt very sad and disappointed, so I left the restaurant crying. I was waiting for his apology, but he did not call. Even I was angry, I looked at him at his work but I could not find him and I asked a worker about him, and the worker told me that Emile had had an accident in his car on September 4th at night. That was the date he left me in the restaurant alone. I ran to the hospital very sorrowful. When I got to the hospital his brother told me that he had received a strong hit in the head that he could not remember anything about his past and that it was not appropriate to force him to remember things, because he was rehabilitating. I wanted to be next to him, but his brother asked me to come back when he was better.

Days were long and nights were eternal, I worried about his health, and I was so scared that he could not remember me anymore, I did not want to lose him. I thought about him every single second of the day. After two weeks Emile’s brother telephoned me to tell me that Emile was better and I could visit him. I waited the time to leave my work to go to see Emile. In fact, he did not remember me, which made feel even worse. I could not force him to remember me, so I introduced myself as a friend, but I did not tell him about the special friendship that we shared. Time passed by and he did not remember me, when I visited him during my free time he showed distrustful and he did not want to talk to me. I could understand his situation, but it was painful that everything we lived together was erased from his head. I always asked God someone like him; I was waiting someone exciting as him, I wanted live my life next to him and I felt I was losing him. One day, I decided to tell him everything about us, I could not stand it, and I missed Emile so much. I got to his house and I asked him to take a walk just for talking. While we were walking he was shy, but finally we got to that place where we first met, under that huge tree. There I told him about our experiences and all the things we had been through. He was thoughtful, and I dared to kiss him, and then he looked at me, I could swear that he was remembering me for the way he was looking at me, but he just stood up and he left me there. I understood that it would be hard to make him remember all the events we lived. Some days after, I knew he moved to another city. I do not know what happened but I stayed there wishing he had not forgotten all of our memories.
